Turn 59 of 226
Start the new training cycle — seven-hit chains, ground transitions, push kick to jumping knee to high kick and set up the standing desk workspace for tomorrow's first remote work day
The cycle begins at dawn. The first skylight catches the grey light and the column moves across the concrete and Lena is already moving — the body does not wait for the sun. The warm-up is the same: joint rotations, shadow work, three rounds of shadow combinations at half speed to wake the muscle memory. Then the bag. The seven-hit chains come first and they come at full force and the concrete takes every impact without sound. Cross, hook, roundhouse, knee, elbow, push kick, jumping knee — the sequence flows and the bag rocks and the base shifts and the water inside sloshes and the vinyl holds. She runs it from both sides. Orthodox lead. Southpaw lead. The body moves between stances without hesitation now and the hesitation that existed two cycles ago is gone because the body has absorbed the combinations and the combinations are part of the tissue. She writes in the legal pad: 'Seven-hit chains — both stances, full force. Clean. Transitions fluid. No lag between strikes 3 and 4 — corrected.'
The ground transitions drill on the concrete and the concrete is unforgiving. The bag goes down and she goes down with it — sprawl to side control, the hip driving into the bag's center, the leg blocking the escape route that is not there because the bag cannot escape. The transition to knee-on-belly is faster than last cycle. The knee plants on the vinyl and the weight drops and the posture is upright and the elbow comes down into the bag's surface and the impact is a dull thud that the concrete amplifies. She drills it twenty times. The left side. The right side. The bruised rib from the tournament twinges on the eighth repetition and the warmth absorbs it and by the twelfth the twinge is gone and the rib is working and the working is healing. She writes: 'Ground transitions — sprawl to side control to knee-on-belly. Speed improved. Rib tolerating impact. Elbow precision better — targeting consistent.'
The new combination is the one she designed on the legal pad last night and it is the most complex sequence she has attempted. Push kick to create distance — the bag swings back. Jumping knee as the bag returns — the explosion upward, the knee meeting the vinyl at the apex. Then the high kick. The high kick comes after the landing and the landing is a weight transfer from the jumping leg to the base leg and the base leg is enormous and the balance holds and the high kick fires from the planted foot and the shin drives into the bag at head height and the impact is a crack that echoes off every wall in the warehouse. The chain is three movements and the three movements cover every range — long range with the push kick, clinch range with the jumping knee, head-level striking with the high kick. She drills it at half speed first, then three-quarter, then full. At full speed the crack is louder than anything she has produced and the bag swings wild and the base slides two inches on the concrete and the vinyl is dented where the shin landed.
She breaks at midday. The sun is high and the skylights pour white columns across the floor and the warehouse is bright and hot and the sweat is running off her body in streams that darken the concrete in patches. She drinks from the water containers — two gallons gone since yesterday — and eats the food she had delivered to the loading bay. Rice and chicken and bread and the eating is fast and purposeful and the fuel goes into the body and the body converts it. She sits on the concrete and the concrete is warm where the sun has heated it and the warmth is the same warmth and the warmth is good.
The afternoon is for the workspace. The standing desk is a problem because she has no desk and no computer and no phone. The solution is the legal pad. She works through the remote-work logistics in her head and writes them down: she needs a laptop. She cannot submit deliverables via email without one. She cannot maintain availability during core hours without a device. The warehouse has electricity — she found the breaker box in the back and the lights in the loading bay work — but no internet. She writes: 'Need laptop. Need internet. Diane's laptop was borrowed — cannot sustain. Options: mobile hotspot, library, Diane.' The legal pad does not solve the problem. The legal pad identifies it. She sets the page aside and returns to the bag. The combination chain fires again — push kick, jumping knee, high kick — and the crack fills the warehouse and the warehouse holds and the body is warm and the cycle is moving and tomorrow she works from here and the here is correct but the logistics are not solved and the unsolved is a thread that the body cannot train away.
