Turn 70 of 226
Work on my weaknesses the next cycle, especially with MArcus. Surprise Marcus with an untelegraphed high kick. I have still been practicing those
The legal pad entry from the tournament is taped to the warehouse wall above the bag and the entry is the cycle's bible. Calf kicks. Stance adjustment. Active checking. The words are circled three times in black marker and the circling is emphasis and the emphasis is the body's priority. She starts the first morning with stance work — squaring her hips slightly, bringing the lead foot inward to close the angle on the calf, drilling the adjustment until the new stance does not compromise her reach advantage or her kicking power. The adjustment is millimeters. The millimeters are the difference between a calf kick landing flush and glancing off the shin bone she has spent months conditioning. She checks the mirror — the polished steel against the wall — and the stance is more squared and the more-squared is the correction and the correction is small and the small is the point.
The checking drills are harder. Active checking requires the lead leg to lift and the shin to meet the incoming kick mid-air and the timing is everything. She drills it against the bag — swinging the bag in low arcs that simulate calf kicks and lifting the shin to intercept. The first hundred reps are late. The shin catches the bag after impact. By rep two hundred the timing tightens. By rep three hundred the check is automatic and the bag swings into the shin and stops and the stopping is the interception and the interception is the correction working. The shin bone does not care. The shin bone has been conditioning for months and the conditioning is armor and the armor is the foundation the checking is built on.
Day four is the Marcus session and the session is where the corrections get tested against a body that hits back. Marcus sees the stance change immediately — he is a fighter and fighters read stances the way readers read sentences. 'Squared up,' he says. 'Yeah.' He throws a low kick in the first round and the check is there and the shin meets his shin and the impact is loud and Marcus pulls the leg back and nods. The nod is data received. He throws three more in the round and she checks two and the third lands but the stance has taken the flush off the kick and the kick glances instead of cratering. The gap is closing. The gap is not closed. The closing is the direction.
The high kick is the thing she has been drilling in the warehouse and the drilling has been quiet — not on the legal pad, not in the notes, just the body and the bag and the repetition. The kick is a left high kick from the squared stance and the kick does not telegraph because the squared stance means the hips are already aligned and the alignment means no rotational wind-up. She has drilled it four hundred times. The bag has the dent at head height to prove it. In the third round with Marcus she throws it. The setup is a jab — the weaponized jab, the snapped jab that rocks his head back — and the jab creates the opening and the opening is the left high kick and the kick comes from the stance with no shift and no chamber and no warning. Marcus's left hand comes up and the kick lands on his forearm instead of his head and the impact pushes him sideways three steps and his eyes widen. The widening is surprise. Marcus does not get surprised. 'Where the hell did that come from,' he says. 'I've been working on it.' He rolls his forearm and the rolling is the evidence that the kick would have ended the fight if it had landed clean. 'Don't throw that at my head,' he says. 'Not yet,' she says.
The rest of the cycle is the corrections tightening and the tightening is visible. Day nine with Marcus is the test. He throws calf kicks in every round and she checks them — not all of them, but eight out of ten, and the two that land are glancing. The stance holds. The reach is not compromised. The jab is still a weapon. The push kick is still clean. The high kick is still in reserve and Marcus respects it now and the respect changes the distance he keeps and the changed distance is a new variable she can exploit. The legal pad entry at the end of the cycle reads: 'Cycle complete. Calf kick gap closing — stance squared, active checking at 80%. High kick drilled — untelegraphed from squared stance, tested on M., impact confirmed. Work: four deliverables, all excellent. Body: 390 lbs, 7'6", HR 35. Growth: 1 inch this cycle. Corrections from M. holding. New gap: checking consistency — 80% needs to be 95%.' The marker is thick and the spiral tightens and the gaps are closing and the closing is the body becoming what it is becoming and the body is warm and the warmth says yes.
