Turn 88 of 226
Celebrate the upcoming tournament with food and pleasure on the warehouse floor. Win the Tournament with the old weaknesses covered and only one very minor weakness discovered. Celebrate the win in the same manner
The celebration before the tournament is the body's ritual now — the same sequence, the same order, the animal preparing itself the way the animal knows how. She orders the food with the burner phone, tapping the screen with a calloused thumb, and the order is the largest she has placed: six pounds of short ribs, eight pounds of rice, a gallon of beef broth, two whole roasted chickens. The delivery driver leaves the bags at the warehouse door because the delivery driver has been here before and the driver does not enter. She carries the bags to the center of the floor and tips them out. The food spreads across the concrete — meat and rice and sauce and grease, the chickens splitting apart where they land — and the spreading is the meal claiming the space the way the body claims the warehouse.
She eats on her hands and knees. Her face lowers to the concrete and her hands grip the meat and her teeth tear. The short ribs come apart in her jaw and the fat and gristle and bone separate and the separation is the animal's eating and the eating is not gentle. The rice she scoops in fistfuls and the fistfuls are enormous — her hands are proportional to her frame now, wide and thick-fingered, and a single fistful holds more than a bowl. The broth she drinks from the jug and the jug is too small for her hands and she tilts it and the liquid runs down her throat and down her chest and pools in the hollow of her collarbone. She moans between bites. The moans are low and involuntary and they come from the belly and the belly is filling and the filling is the body's pleasure and the pleasure is the wish's language.
The arousal comes before the food is gone. It always does. The fullness triggers it — the warmth of the meal radiating from her core, the weight of the food pressing against her insides, the distension of her belly against the concrete. Her hands find the landscape of her body and the finding is rough. She grips the fat of her belly — the thick layer over the dense muscle, the soft and the hard together — and the gripping sends the sensation through her in a wave that reaches every surface. Her hips grind against the concrete and the grinding is raw friction and the friction is the animal's rhythm. She moans and the moan fills the warehouse and the warehouse holds it. She comes with a rib bone between her teeth and the coming is loud and the loud is not a choice. The second orgasm follows the first and the third follows the second and each one is deeper and slower and the depth is the body taking its time because the body has time. The puddle beneath her spreads. She lies in it. The food stains and the grease and the sweat and the release are all on the same concrete and the concrete does not separate them because the concrete does not judge.
She walks to the tournament naked. Four miles through the industrial district at night. The walk is the warm-up and the warm-up is the body's preparation. The check-in table has four people now. The entry fee is four hundred dollars. The bracket is on the wall — 256 fighters, eight rounds, $25,000. The seeds are marked. The field is deeper than the last tournament. She finds her name and the names around hers are fighters she has beaten and fighters she has not seen and the not-seen is the thing that makes the bracket interesting.
She wins. The winning is eight fights and the eight fights are cleaner than any tournament before. The first three rounds are tape-studied opponents and the tape-studied opponents break the same way — the gate closes the circling, the compressed stance tracks the blind spot, the whizzer chains into the underhook and the frame and the separation. The corrections hold. The fourth round is a fighter with a 15-2 record who shoots a chained takedown — single leg to double leg to body lock — and the chained defense flows. Whizzer, underhook, frame, separate, cross. The cross lands clean. The fighter does not get up. The fifth round is a kickboxer who throws calf kicks and the check timing is automatic and the checked kick buckles the kickboxer's shin and the buckling is the check becoming offense.
The sixth round is the Muay Thai specialist from the last tournament and the specialist has adapted — the low kicks chain into teeps, the teeps chain into clinch entries, the entries are faster and more varied. The shooting double bypasses the entire striking exchange. The slam. The mount. The elbow does not finish — the specialist survives the first elbow and rolls to guard — and the ground game's third option deploys: the triangle from mount, the leg locking across the neck, the specialist tapping in round three. The submission is the new weapon's first tournament deployment and the deployment is the tape's new problem. The seventh round — the semifinal — is a wrestler with a 12-1 record and the wrestler's chain wrestling is the best she has faced. The single leg stuffs the whizzer. The reshoot stuffs the underhook. The body lock stuffs the frame. The defense's fourth link — the separation — does not come because the wrestler does not allow separation. She wins from the clinch — the knee to the body, the cross on the break — but the winning took four rounds and the wrestler exposed the thing she did not expect: the chained defense is a sequence, and a sequence can be disrupted if the opponent reads the sequence's order. The wrestler read the order. The whizzer came first and the wrestler attacked the whizzer's leverage. The underhook came second and the wrestler attacked the underhook's angle. The disruption is minor — the defense still held, the separation still came, the knee still landed — but the disruption is the weakness. The defense needs to be non-sequential. The defense needs to be responsive, not patterned.
The final is the 8-0 grappler from two tournaments ago, now 11-1, and the grappler has rebuilt. The clinch entries are faster. The takedown defense is better. The grappler does not shoot — the grappler pressures forward, waits for the exchange, and counters the shooting double with a sprawl that is technically perfect. The sprawl is the first time anyone has stuffed the double-leg in a tournament. The sprawl works because the grappler drilled it against tape and the tape showed the knee drop and the knee drop is the entry's tell. The shooting double is no longer vaulted. The double is on tape. She wins from the standup — the compressed stance, the level change, the nine-hit chain at full speed, the cross finishing in round four — but the winning took everything. The body is tired. The tired is the tournament's cost and the cost is the depth.
The walk home is slower. The envelope is against her ribs — twenty-five thousand dollars, the paper warm from her skin. She walks naked through the industrial district and the walking is the body cooling down and the cooling is the engine decelerating. The warehouse door is open. She goes to the floor. The food is already ordered — the burner phone, the calloused thumb, the same order, larger this time. The delivery arrives. She tips the bags out onto the concrete and the food spreads and the spreading is the celebration's beginning. She eats on her hands and knees. Her face is in the food. Her hands grip and tear. The grease runs down her chin and her neck and her chest. She moans between bites and the moans are the body's honest sounds and the honest sounds are the animal's language.
The arousal comes and the coming is not a decision. Her hands find her body — the belly, the fullness of it, the food pressing against her insides, the weight of the meal and the weight of the body and the weight is the same weight and the same is the wish's truth. She grinds against the concrete and the grinding is raw and the raw is the animal's pleasure. She comes three times and each one is louder than the last and the loud is the warehouse's acoustics giving back what she puts in. She releases on the floor — the stream hitting the concrete, the warmth pooling, the moan that comes from the release is the same moan that comes from the orgasm and the same moan that comes from the eating because the body does not separate them. The legal pad entry comes later, written in the dark, the marker in her calloused hand. 'Apex 256 won. 8 rounds. $25,000. Record: 32-0, all finishes. New weakness: chained takedown defense is sequential. Opponent read the order and disrupted the chain. Defense needs to be responsive, not patterned — read the entry, select the counter, do not default to sequence. Minor. Closeable.' The body rests on the concrete. The concrete holds her. The holding is the floor's function.
