Opening scene

Jess dragged her suitcase up the last flight of stairs, the cheap plastic wheels catching on every cracked step. The hallway smelled like cigarette smoke, fried food, and something sour she couldn’t place. She fumbled with the key the landlord had mailed her, finally shoving the door open.

The condo was smaller than the pictures had suggested. Thin carpet, stained in places. Broken blinds half-covering a window that looked out onto a noisy street. A sagging couch, a tiny kitchen with dishes still in the sink, and a bedroom barely big enough for a mattress and a dresser.

She set her suitcase down and started opening closets and drawers, hoping to find space for her own things. Instead she froze.

One closet was still full: tiny crop tops that looked more like bras, micro-skirts, shiny leggings, and two cheap synthetic wigs—one long and straight, one a big curly weave. The dresser drawers spilled over with thongs, fishnets, push-up bras, and bottles of dark foundation, lip gloss, and heavy sweet perfume. On the bathroom counter sat a half-empty bottle of the same perfume, a used toothbrush, and a couple of hair ties. A few polaroids were stuck to the mirror: a thick, dark-skinned woman in revealing outfits, posing with different guys, always smiling like she owned the place.

Jess’s stomach turned. “Gross… who lived here?” she muttered. She grabbed a trash bag and started stuffing clothes into it, but stopped halfway. She was tired, the sun was going down, and the music outside was already getting louder—bass thumping through the walls, people shouting, a car stereo blasting. She told herself she’d throw everything out tomorrow. Tonight she just needed to sleep.

She locked the door, shoved a chair under the handle, and sat on the edge of the bare mattress in her modest t-shirt and jeans, listening to the neighborhood she had accidentally moved into. For the first time since leaving her quiet rural town, she felt truly alone… and a little scared.

Turn 1 of 19

Jess finds the bag of leftover clothes. Disgusted but curious, she tries a tight crop top and mini-skirt for a laugh. They fit snugly. She puts on big hoop earrings easily. Looks ridiculous in the mirror but feels a strange little thrill. Almost takes everything off, keeps it on a bit longer.

The next morning the air in the condo hung thick and stale. Jess hauled herself from the mattress, her nerves still jangling from the night before—raised voices in the hall, the ceaseless thump of bass through the walls, the awful feeling that every noise might be someone trying the lock downstairs. She'd barely slept.

She took a shaky sip of water from the tap and wandered back into the bedroom, stopping short when she saw the bag of clothes she'd planned to throw out. They were piled carelessly in the corner, the bright fabric and acid colours glaring even in the dim morning light. Before she could stop herself, Jess reached in.

She pulled out a tiny black crop top, little more than a band of spandex, and a skirt so short it looked more like a belt. Her nose wrinkled. Ugh, gross. But. It bad been so long since she'd worn anything but jeans and t-shirts, so long since she'd felt… anything at all, really. Still half asleep, she stripped off her own plain pyjamas.

The clothes slid on with unsettling ease. The skirt clung to her hips, the top stretched tight across her chest, neither quite fitting right but both undeniably sitting as if they knew her body. Jess stared at herself in the cracked mirror above the dresser. The girl looking back was a stranger—slim but unmistakably thicker, her skin seeming darker in the dim light, a pink shine where her old pale neck met the black fabric. She laughed, a nervous, startled sound, and the girl in the mirror laughed with her. A strange little thrill shot up her spine, warm and forbidden.
