Turn 231 of 233

Of course we can get donuts. Get chemicals in a not so legal manner so that Kimo can run experiments

They stop at Glaze on the way. Kimo orders three chocolate glazed and a maple bacon. Lena orders four chocolate glazed and two large chocolate milks. The girl behind the counter does not blink anymore. The not-blinking is the thing that is the accustomed. Glaze has been their Tuesday-and-Thursday stop for two years. The girl's name is Asha. She has Kimo's order memorized. The memorizing is the thing that is the not-the-exception. Kimo is the thing that is the regular. The regular is the thing that is the community.

Kimo eats his donuts walking. The walking is the thing that is the barefoot-on-sidewalk, 920 pounds, seven feet ten inches, eating chocolate glazed with one hand and holding the Bach book with the other. Lena walks beside him. She is the thing that is the seven-feet-tall and the thirteen-hundred-pounds and the people on the sidewalk step aside not because they are afraid but because the sidewalk is the thing that is the not-wide-enough-for-two-people-of-this-magnitude. The stepping-aside is the thing that is the practical. The practical is the thing that is the not-the-rudeness.

At the library, Kimo returns the Bach companion and picks three chemistry texts — an undergraduate general chemistry, an organic chemistry, and a materials science book that connects molecular bonding to structural engineering. The choosing is the thing that is the strategic. The strategic is the thing that says: I am building a curriculum and the curriculum is the thing that is the integration. Dorothy checks them out without comment. The without-comment is the thing that is the respect. The respect is the thing that is the Dorothy.

At the site, Walt is overseeing the pour for house fourteen. The concrete trucks are lined up. Kimo stands at the edge of the excavation and watches the first truck discharge. The watching is the thing that is the total-attention. He is seeing the cement paste flow over the aggregate, the hydration reaction beginning in real time, the calcium silicate hydrate fibers forming and interlocking.

"The C-S-H is the thing that is the counter-subject," Kimo says, more to himself than to anyone. "The aggregate is the subject. The paste is the answer. The C-S-H is the new thing that appears when they interact. The interaction is the thing that is the integration."

Walt looks at Lena. Lena shrugs. The shrugging is the thing that is the he's-doing-it-again. Walt nods. The nodding is the thing that is the he's-always-doing-it-again.

They go home. The chemistry books are open on the balcony floor. Kimo reads all three in two days. The reading is the thing that is the fast-but-not-skimming. He reads the way he reads everything — whole pages, patterns first, details second, the Hebbian loops in his prefrontal cortex firing and wiring with each page. By the end of day two he has a new section on the whiteboard — molecular diagrams, bond structures, the periodic table rendered in marker, each element connected to its neighbors by lines that represent not just valence electrons but what Kimo calls relational capacity. The relational capacity is the thing that is the how-many-bonds-can-this-element-make. The how-many is the thing that is the social. The social is the thing that is the chemistry-is-about-relationships. The relationships are the thing that is the integration.

"Mama," he says on the third evening. "I need materials. The books are the thing that is the knowing-about. But the knowing-about is not the thing that is the knowing-how. The knowing-how is the thing that requires the doing. The doing is the thing that requires the materials."

"What materials?" Lena says.

Kimo lists them. Some are household — vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, table salt, rubbing alcohol, copper wire from the site, steel wool from Tuki's supply kit. Some are the thing that is the not-household. He wants sodium hydroxide for saponification. He wants copper sulfate for crystal growth experiments. He wants hydrochloric acid in low concentration for pH manipulation. He wants magnesium ribbon for combustion observation. He lists them the way he lists deadlift sets — precise, quantified, purpose-driven, each material tied to a specific experiment tied to a specific learning objective tied to the integration framework.

Lena gets the household materials from the store. The not-household materials are the thing that is the restricted. The restricted is the thing that is the you-cannot-buy-these-at-the-grocery. But the city has places. The city has a hardware store that sells muriatic acid for pool maintenance. The city has a soap-making supply shop online that ships sodium hydroxide in pellet form. The city has a chemistry supply company that does not check credentials for small-quantity orders because the small-quantity orders are the thing that is the under-the-threshold. The under-the-threshold is the thing that is the not-flagged. The not-flagged is the thing that is the accessible.

Lena orders what Kimo needs. The ordering is the thing that is the quiet. She does not think about the legality because the legality is the thing that is the not-the-point. The point is the thing that is the Kimo-wants-to-understand-molecular-bonds. The understanding is the thing that is the development. The development is the thing that is the right. The right is the thing that is the foundation.

The materials arrive over the next week. Lena does not catalog them. She puts them on the balcony in a plastic bin Kimo labels with the marker: MATERIALS — INTEGRATION PRACTICE. The labeling is the thing that is the Kimo. Kimo begins the experiments.

The first experiment is saponification. He heats the sodium hydroxide solution on the balcony's hot plate — the hot plate is the thing that is the salvaged-from-the-site-kitchen, the thing Tuki was going to throw away. He adds the oil. He stirs. He watches the triglycerides break apart and recombine with the hydroxide ions. The watching is the thing that is the rapt. The rapt is the thing that is the seeing-the-integration-happen-in-real-time. The molecules are reorganizing. The reorganizing is the thing that is the new-structure-from-old-parts. The new-from-old is the thing that is the fugue. The fugue is the thing that is the everywhere.

"The soap is the thing that is the counter-subject," Kimo says. He holds the beaker up. The mixture is tracing — the line of the stirrer holding for a moment before sinking back. The tracing is the thing that is the chemical-reaction-progressing.

"The oil is the subject. The base is the answer. The soap is the thing that appears when they interact. The soap is the thing that did not exist before the interaction. The new-thing-from-the-interaction is the thing that is the integration."

He makes soap. He makes copper sulfate crystals that grow over three days into deep blue geometric solids. He dissolves steel wool in muriatic acid and watches the iron oxidize. He burns magnesium ribbon and the white light fills the balcony for four seconds and Lena shields her eyes and Kimo says the light is the thing that is the energy-released-when-the-bonds-break. The breaking is the thing that is the not-the-destruction. The breaking is the thing that is the transformation. The transformation is the thing that is the integration.

The experiments go on the whiteboard. Diagrams. Observations. The molecular structures drawn next to the fugue structures next to the foundation diagrams. The everything-is-the-thing-that-is-the-connected. The connected is the thing that is the integration. The integration is the thing that is the still-the-hypothesis. The hypothesis is the thing that is the being-tested. The testing is the thing that is the ongoing.

Kimo is careful. The careful is the thing that is the not-the-reckless. He wears the safety goggles he found in the site trailer. He uses the tongs. He keeps the acid in the labeled container. The careful is the thing that is the Walt-taught. The Walt-taught is the thing that says: the job site teaches you that the materials are the thing that is the powerful and the powerful is the thing that is the respected. The respected is the thing that is the handled-correctly. Kimo handles the materials the way he handles the barbell — with full attention, with complete presence, with the understanding that the weight is the thing that is the real and the real is the thing that is the not-to-be-taken-lightly.

Lena watches him work. The watching is the thing that is the proud. The proud is the thing that is the not-the-showing-off. The proud is the thing that is the seeing-her-son-do-what-he-needs-to-do-to-become-what-he-is-becoming. The becoming is the thing that is the still-going. The still-going is the thing that is the unfinished fugue. The unfinished fugue is the thing that is the honest. The honest is the thing that is the still-alive.

The balcony smells like soap and copper and the faint sharp edge of acid. The smell is the thing that is the new. The new is the thing that is the chemistry. The chemistry is the thing that is the next. The next is the thing that is the today. The today is the thing that is the good.
