Turn 80 of 233
Push the fourth retrofit to completion this week. Push all exercises even higher
The fourth retrofit finishes Thursday afternoon. Not nine days like the third — six days. The crew moves with the precision of a system that has been tuned across four houses and three retrofits, every connection memorized, every sequence locked in. Lena walks the final beam across the lot in the sumo stance — three hundred pounds of body carrying six hundred pounds of steel — and sets it into the frame and Frank drives the bolts and the welds are clean and the shoring is solid and the building is done. Walt walks it at four-thirty and checks every connection, every weld, every load path. He stands in the middle of the floor and takes off his hard hat and rubs his head.
"Six days," he says. "I've been doing this twenty-two years. Six days on a warehouse conversion is something I've never seen."
"The crew," Lena says.
"The crew is good because you make them good. That's the difference." Walt pulls out his phone.
"I'm calling Jensen. Bonus line items on all four retrofits. Every one of them."
He walks away and Lena stands in the finished building and the steel is good and the work is good and the crew is packing the truck and Marco claps her shoulder as he passes.
"See you Monday, boss." She nods and the day is done.
She drives home and the rest week is long gone and the body is hungry. She loads the pipe on the balcony and the number is two-eighty and the press is easier than Monday — the shake at lockout is a tremor now, not a fight, the muscle adapting faster than she can add weight. She does five sets of three at two-eighty and the last rep is clean. She reaches for another block. Two-eighty-five. Gets under the pipe. The press is a war — jaw locked, belly driving, arms shaking — but the weight goes up. Two reps. She drops to two-seventy for three more sets and the drop feels like recovery. She writes *find heavier pipe or plates* on the legal pad and underlines it twice.
The pushups go to fifty. Five sets of fifty and the chest is burning and the tribal sleeves shift with every push and the new density in the shoulders absorbs the work. Squats at ninety-five-pound bags — five sets of fifteen — and the thighs are trembling but the three hundred pounds she carries makes the squats feel like the body is just doing what it does every time she stands up with a beam on her shoulder. Curls and rows with the heaviest pipes. Planks at three minutes and the core is locked and the belly hangs and the weight is stable and the hold is clean. She eats ten thousand calories — two chickens, three pots of rice, a pound of ground beef, a bag of donuts, a quart of milk, a box of protein bars — and the belch that follows shakes the kitchen window. She farts and the sound is long and deep and she lies on the balcony floor and the muscle ache is setting in and the body is growing and she is comfortable.
She calls Janet from the balcony floor. "Fourth retrofit is done. Six days. Walt is calling Jensen about bonuses on all four."
Janet is quiet for a moment. "Six days. Lena, that's — your father will want to hear this."
"Tell him."
"I will. He's been asking about you. He won't say it to you but he asks me every night if you've called." Janet pauses.
"The photo. The three hundred. He looked at it for a long time. He didn't say anything but he kept it on his phone. I saw him open it twice."
Lena closes her eyes. The night is warm and the grime is thick and the muscle ache is deep and the phone is warm against her ear and Samuel kept the photo. Opened it twice. Didn't say anything. Kept it. She knows what that means because she knows Samuel Park, and Samuel Park does not keep things that don't matter to him.
"Monday the leg sleeves start," Lena says. "Left leg. Calf and shin. Six to eight sessions per leg. Two months."
"Send me pictures."
"Every session."
She hangs up and lies on the balcony and the stars are out and the press is at two-eighty-five and the retrofit is done in six days and Samuel kept the photo and Monday the needle starts on the legs and the body is three hundred pounds and growing and she is comfortable. She is so deeply comfortable.
