Opening scene
You wake in a field with a status window hanging in the air, and you already know it's bad because the numbers are glowing an embarrassed shade of red. STRENGTH: 2. CHARISMA: 1. LUCK: 0 (see note). The note, when you squint, reads: "they know what they did — R."
R. There is exactly one person who signs things R, one person petty enough to drive to the Divine Allocation Office of the afterlife and spend real effort making your fantasy rebirth as miserable as arithmetic allows. Your WISDOM is 3. Your one and only maxed stat is SPITE, which you are fairly sure is not a real attribute, and which is currently sitting at 99.
A goblin the size of a fridge steps out of the treeline and looks at your health bar with open contempt. You have a rusty spoon, a starting quest that assumes competence you demonstrably lack, and one absurd stat nobody planned for. Somewhere, R is laughing. The goblin raises its club.
Turn 1 of 13
I take in the scene, and act on what matters most.
The goblin's club is already descending when your body moves without thought—not toward the weapon, but toward the humiliation.
You duck under the swing, rusty spoon clutched in one white-knuckled fist, and you drive it with all the force your Strength 2 arms can muster into the creature's kneecap. The spoon bends. The goblin doesn't even flinch. But you are already shouting, already pouring every ounce of that impossible 99 Spite into your voice: "R. sent me, you green-faced tax write-off! R., who knows what you did in the Third Warren!"
The goblin freezes. Its yellow eyes narrow, then widen, then dart toward the treeline as if expecting ambush. You have no idea what the Third Warren is. You have no idea if R. knew anything about goblins at all. But your Spite stat burns behind your sternum like swallowed lightning, and the lie tastes like copper and victory.
"The reckoning," you hiss, stepping closer while it stumbles backward, "comes with paperwork."
The goblin flees. Not walks—flees, crashing through underbrush, leaving its club embedded in the earth where your skull should be. You stand in the sudden silence, chest heaving, bent spoon dangling from fingers that won't stop trembling. The status window flickers overhead, and for the first time, your Spite stat pulses with something almost like recognition.
A laugh cracks out of you, hollow and wild. You have defeated nothing. You have gained no experience, no loot, no dignity. But you are alive, and somewhere in the arithmetic of divine malice, a number just proved it mattered.
