Turn 12 of 12
Demand that she let Dario leave.
You plant your feet, forcing your voice to steady despite the unnatural chill radiating from her. You gesture toward the dark corner where Dario remains, a silent, trembling witness to the scene. The air feels thick, saturated with the scent of ozone and something older, like damp earth and forgotten stone. You refuse to let her focus remain entirely on you, knowing that if you lose the only other person who understands the nature of this place, you will be truly alone in her orbit.
"Let him go, Wren," you say, your voice echoing against the cold brick walls. "He has nothing to do with this. If you want to keep me here, if you want me to be part of your collection, then let him walk out of this building right now." You watch her closely, searching for a crack in that composed, ancient mask. You are gambling that her pride, or perhaps her adherence to the rules she claims to uphold, will force her hand.
She stops her circling, the pale, sickly light around her dimming until it is little more than a faint halo. She turns her head toward the emergency exit, her expression unreadable, though her eyes narrow with a flicker of genuine annoyance. The silence that follows is heavy, pressing against your eardrums until you can hear the frantic, uneven rhythm of your own heart. She seems to be weighing the cost of your demand, her fingers twitching at her side as if she is debating whether to snap the thread of your defiance.
"He is a nuisance, nothing more," she murmurs, her voice devoid of the melodic warmth she used earlier. She flicks a hand toward the exit, a dismissive gesture that carries the weight of a command.
"Let him scurry back to his books and his folklore. He is a mortal who will fade soon enough regardless of whether I allow him to leave this hallway tonight." She looks back at you, her gaze intense and possessive, as if the concession is a gift she is granting only to you.
In the darkness, you hear the sharp, metallic click of the emergency exit handle being turned. Dario doesn't wait for a second invitation; the door creaks open, and he slips out into the night air with a frantic, desperate speed. You are left alone in the corridor with her, the silence rushing back in to fill the space where his presence had been. You have won a small victory, but as the door swings shut with a final, echoing thud, you realize you have also narrowed your world down to just the two of you.
