Mae eats 40,000 calories a day. Carl cooks for twenty hours. The eating bay is Mae's home. Lena is sitting on the bay floor with Marcus when the conversation starts. The 2,840 pounds. The fourteen feet. The body that fills the space the way water fills a container — completely, without effort, the body finding every corner. Marcus is beside her. The laptop open. Not blueprints this time. A school district website.
"They're five," Marcus says. "Compulsory age. The district sent a letter. Registration deadline is August fifteenth."

"We could homeschool," Marcus says.

"Like the building," Marcus says.
"Like the building," Lena says. "We needed a building that didn't exist. So you designed one. They need a school that doesn't exist."
Marcus looks at her. The yellow nails on the laptop edge. The face of the architect who has spent five years designing the world that fits them.
"You want me to design a school," he says.
"I want you to design a school," Lena says. "Or talk to the district about modifying an existing one. Or talk to Diane about whether the STREAM division can fund something. Or talk to Billy Jo about whether the NIH grant can be extended to educational infrastructure. I want you to do what you do — look at the body that doesn't fit the building and design the building that fits the body."
Marcus closes the laptop. Sits back. The 1,090 pounds settling on the concrete. The broad frame. The face that is thinking — not about whether he can do it but about where to start.
"June needs running surfaces," he says. "Vertical and horizontal. Structural. The classroom has to be a climbing environment. Iris needs writing stations and storage for composition books — hundreds of them. And quiet. She needs quiet. The hum is loud for her. "So we don't," Lena says.
"We don't what?"
"We don't put them in a room with thirty-five-pound five-year-olds. We build a different room. A room for them. A room that fits them. And maybe — maybe other children like them. If there are any."
Marcus stops pacing. Looks at her.
"You think there are others?"
Lena puts her hands on her belly. The 2,840 pounds. The hum in the concrete. The building that holds eight bodies and the gradient that is still working.
"The building is the experiment," she says. "Billy Jo said that. The building is the gradient. And the building is standing. And the grant is funded. And the data is published. And if the data is real — if the concentration gradient is real — then it's not just us. It's anyone who gets close enough for long enough."
She looks at Marcus. The architect. The man who designed the building that holds them.
"Build the school," she says. "Build it next to the facility. Build it for bodies that don't exist yet. Because they're going to exist."
