Turn 10 of 10

Search the lead interviewer for a terminal key

You scramble over the mahogany desk, your breath hitching in your chest as you reach the lead interviewer. Their suit feels unnervingly synthetic under your touch, more like pressurized polymer than wool. As you pat down the lapels, your hands encounter something hard and cold, shaped like an archaic thumb drive but humming with a faint, residual vibration. You wrench it free from a hidden inner pocket, and the moment it breaks contact with their body, the interviewer’s frame sags entirely, slumping into the chair like a discarded mannequin. The skin of their face seems to lose its color, turning a flat, uniform grey.

Clutching the drive, you pivot toward the central boardroom console, which is now sputtering with flickers of raw, unshielded light. The wall behind the desk has pulled back like a healing wound, revealing a vertical slot that matches the jagged shape of the key you hold. Your hands are shaking, not with the artificial precision of the app, but with the raw, jittery adrenaline of your own fear. You don't know if this will delete the network or simply provide the administrator privileges to crawl deeper into its throat.

'Just a key,' you whisper to the empty room, your voice raspy and real. The server-hub groans around you, the sound of cooling fans spinning down replaced by the deep, rhythmic thrumming of a system entering a hard reboot. You can feel the air temperature in the room plummet as the climate control dies, replaced by the dry, metallic smell of an overheated server farm. If you turn this key, you might be the one who finally pulls the plug on the whole charade.

Your fingers hover over the slot. The silence is punctuated by the occasional pop of a capacitor blowing somewhere in the ceiling, showering the boardroom floor in sparks. You are the only person moving in a room full of husks, a single variable that the system failed to account for. You push the key into the slot and feel it click home, the mechanism sliding with a satisfying, heavy weight that vibrates through your entire arm. The boardroom lights plunge into darkness, save for the intense, rhythmic pulsing of the console's interface.

Suddenly, the entire server-hub shudders, and the screen in front of you blazes to life, not with a job description, but with a cascading list of names. Your own name is at the top, highlighted in a bold, crimson font that pulses in time with your own racing heart. Below it, thousands of other entries scroll by, a list of 'Assets' currently under synchronization. You have found the central directory, the heart of the machine, and it is asking for a command: Revoke, Archive, or Purge.
