The Trainer’s Edge
MC challenges her trainer Valko over a contract clause, then tests his boundaries by heading for the exit, only to turn back under his watchful gaze.
Opening scene
The digital clock on the mirrored wall reads 19:30. You are 30 minutes late. Valko doesn't turn from where he's adjusting the weight stack on the Smith machine, but the set of his shoulders under his tight green compression shirt tells you he's counted every one of those minutes. The quiet hum of the building's climate control is the only sound in the cavernous, private gym.
"You’re late by 30 minutes and 21 seconds," he says, his voice a low baritone that cuts through the silence without rising. He finally turns, his golden eyes locking onto yours. There's no anger there, but a cool, assessing focus that makes the back of your neck prickle.
"Your session was scheduled for 19:00. My time is not a suggestion."
He gestures with his chin toward the mat in the center of the room.
"Punishment first. Then we train."
Turn 1 of 21
Challenge him, asking what makes him think he can punish you
What makes you think you can punish me? The words leave her mouth before she fully decides to say them, and they hang in the cool recycled air of the gym like a challenge thrown into a temple. MC shifts her weight to one hip, gym bag still slung over her shoulder, and meets those golden eyes dead on. Her heart is hammering harder than it should be for a simple confrontation, but she has never been good at backing down from authority, especially the kind that looks at her like she's a problem to be solved. Valko doesn't answer immediately. He finishes adjusting the weight stack with a deliberate clank of metal on metal, the sound sharp enough to make her jaw tighten. Then he turns to face her fully, and the overhead lights catch the hard planes of his chest and shoulders beneath that compression shirt, the fabric stretched to its limit across a frame that is wider than strictly human. The air around him carries a faint heat, something that the climate control can't account for, and MC is suddenly aware of the distance between them, fifteen feet of matte black rubber flooring that feels simultaneously too far and not far enough. He crosses half that distance in two unhurried strides. "You signed a contract," he says. His voice is low, almost conversational, but there's a vibration beneath it, a resonance in his chest that doesn't belong to a normal man's vocal cords. "Section four, paragraph three. Client agrees to comply with trainer's disciplinary protocol in cases of tardiness, missed reps, or failure to follow programming. You read it. You signed it. I watched you sign it." He stops six feet from her. The corner of his mouth twitches, not quite a smile, but something that knows what a smile is and is choosing not to use one. "So what makes me think I can punish you?" He tilts his head, a slow, animal gesture, and the fluorescent strip above them flickers for a half second, barely noticeable. "You already agreed that I could. The real question is whether you're going to stand there arguing about it while the clock keeps running, or whether you're going to put that bag down and get on the mat." MC feels her fingers tighten on the strap of her bag. The gym is dead silent around them, the only sound the whisper of the ventilation system and the faint, rhythmic sound of Valko's breathing, which is slower and deeper than it should be, as though his lungs are larger than hers, as though the air he pulls in is measured differently. She can feel the heat coming off him from here, not metaphorical heat, actual warmth radiating from his skin like a furnace banked to low, and something low in her belly pulls tight in a way that has nothing to do with fear.
