Turn 17 of 21

Advance

The knot locks. It happens in a single sustained moment — the swelling pressure that has been building crests, and Valko's hips press forward one final time, burying himself fully, and then his body seals them together. MC feels the lock happen in a way that is not pain and not pleasure but something outside the vocabulary of either, a fullness that becomes structural, a joining that her body accepts with a finality that surprises her. Valko goes rigid above her, every muscle in his transformed frame locked, and the sound that comes out of him is not a growl anymore. It is a sound that has no human equivalent — a deep, resonant thing that seems to come from the architecture of his chest cavity itself, and it shakes the mat and the floor and the mirrored wall and the dead air of the gym. His release follows the lock in waves, each one a pulse she can feel inside her where they are joined, and each pulse coincides with a beat of his heart that she can feel through the pigment lines pressed against her bare chest. The rhythm is slower than human — each beat a concussive thud that arrives with deliberation, a drum struck in a language older than speech — and she counts them without meaning to, four, five, six, each one sending another wave through the connection between their bodies. MC's own climax has been building since the rhythm shifted, and the lock pushes her over the edge with a force that makes her vision dissolve into white. Her hands clutch at his shoulders, nails dragging through the coarse hair that covers them, and her body contracts around his in a rhythm that tries to match his heartbeat and cannot, two tempos running against each other, dissonant and overwhelming. Valko's arms give out. His full weight settles onto her — and it is significant, heavier than a human frame of comparable size, the bone density of his transformed body pressing her into the mat with a solidity that should be uncomfortable and is instead grounding, an anchor, a gravity. His face is buried against her neck, his breath coming in long shuddering exhales that wash hot across her skin, and the growl has faded to a low continuous purr that vibrates through his ribcage and into hers. His hand finds hers on the mat beside her head and his fingers lace through hers, and the grip is crushing and desperate and tender all at once, the grip of someone who has just been fully seen for the first time and is not certain the world will hold. "Don't move," he says, and the words are barely voiced, delivered into the skin of her throat in a breath that is more exhalation than speech. "Not yet. It — takes time. Before it —" He doesn't finish. His body is still pulsing inside her, smaller waves now, the intervals between them lengthening, and each one draws a sound from him that is smaller and more human than anything she has heard from him tonight. The trembling has not stopped — his whole frame shudders against her in irregular waves, and she realizes with a clarity that cuts through the haze that he is not trembling from the intensity. He is trembling because he is crying. The sound is nearly silent, just a catching in his breath at irregular intervals, a wetness against her neck that is not sweat, and his hand in hers grips tighter with each catch, as though he is holding onto the one solid thing in a world that has just fundamentally shifted beneath him. MC holds him. Her free hand comes up to the back of his skull, fingers threading into the coarse hair there, and she holds his face against her neck and breathes against the heat of him and waits. The gym is silent around them — no climate control, no hum of machinery, just the distant ticking of cooling metal and the sound of two people breathing together on a mat in a room that smells of copper and something wild. They are not going to train tonight. They are not going to train for a long time. Valko's weight is heavy and real and warm on top of her, and his hand is in hers, and the knot holds them together with a patience that is not human, that does not care about clocks or schedules or contracts, and MC closes her eyes and lets it hold.
