Turn 19 of 21

Tell him he's not alone anymore

MC lifts her forehead from his, just enough to speak. The space between them is an inch, maybe less — close enough that she can see the texture of his transformed skin, the fine coarse grain of it, the way the pigment lines trace paths across his temples like a map to something ancient. His black eyes are open and searching her face with an expression that is still afraid, still braced for the word that will send him back behind the wall he has lived inside for years. She can feel the question he cannot ask pressing against the silence between them, shapeless and enormous.

"You're not alone anymore," she says.

The words are quiet. She doesn't raise her voice — there is no need to, no space for performance in the compressed heat between their bodies, no audience to play to. She says it the way you say a thing that is simply true, a fact of the physical world, like the weight of him on her chest or the knot holding them together. His eyes don't change. The black of them doesn't lighten, the gold doesn't return, but something behind them shifts — a tension she hadn't consciously registered releasing, a bracing that has been in place so long it had become structural. His whole body exhales. Not a breath but a release that travels from his shoulders through his chest and into his hips and into the place where they are joined, and she feels it pass through her like a wave in deep water.

Valko's mouth opens. Closes. His jaw works against the teeth that don't fit it anymore, and the silence that follows her words is so fragile she can feel it in the air between them, a thing with weight and temperature. His hand in hers has gone still — not gripping, not loosening, just present, his rough fingers laced through hers on the mat beside her head. The other hand is still at her face, thumb resting against her cheekbone, and he is looking at her the way someone looks at a door they have been standing in front of for years, one that has just opened onto a room they didn't believe existed.

"I don't know how to —" he starts, and the words break apart. He swallows, and the anatomy of his transformed throat makes the motion visible, the muscles working beneath skin that is no longer quite skin.

"I don't know how to do this. With someone. I never —"

He stops. His forehead drops to hers again, the contact firm, and she can feel the fine tremor returning to his frame — not the trembling of tears this time but something else, something that might be the first fragile stirring of a feeling he doesn't have a name for because he has never been close enough to it to learn. His breath comes in slow, uneven pulls against her lips, and the heat of it is still inhuman, still a furnace, but it has found a rhythm that is trying to match hers. Not succeeding — his lungs are too large, his metabolism too different — but trying, and the effort of it is visible in the controlled expansion of his ribcage against hers.

The knot shifts. Not releasing — not yet — but the first subtle change in the pressure, a softening at the edges that tells her the biology of him is beginning, slowly, to let go. It will be minutes still. Maybe longer. The patience of it is not human, and she finds she is grateful for that, grateful for the body that will not let him pull away before this moment has fully landed, before the words have settled into the place they need to go. His weight is heavy and warm and real on top of her, and the gym is dark and still and smells like copper and ozone and the two of them, and outside these walls a city is going about its evening with no knowledge of what has happened on this mat, and MC holds Valko's face against hers and lets the silence carry the thing they have just said into permanence.
