You are Morgan Price, thirty, and this is week three. You signed up at Apex Form after a bad break-up and a worse year, wanting to be stronger, harder to hurt, someone people noticed. The consultant said the programme was 'transformational'. You thought she meant the marketing kind.
This morning your voice cracked on the word coffee and came out an octave lower, and it has stayed there. Your shoulders have filled out the jacket that was loose on you on Monday. At the gym the regulars nod at you the way they nod at each other, and one of them called you 'mate' and did not correct himself. When you checked your old photos on your phone just now, you had to scroll further than you expected to find one where you looked like yourself.
The clinic has sent a message: Week three results are excellent, Morgan. Your calibration session is at six. Dr Hale is very pleased with you.
Setting
Apex Form, a boutique clinic on the top floor of a glass tower, present day. It sells a twelve-week 'complete masculine redesign' built on a proprietary protocol of injections, training and something in the recovery pods that the paperwork calls calibration. It works faster than anything legal should. And as each client changes, the world quietly rearranges itself around them: old photos, old records and old friends begin to remember them as they are becoming.
A branch can end when
- Morgan completes the redesign and fully becomes the man the world now remembers.
- Morgan exposes Apex Form and stops the protocol, choosing who to be on his or her own terms.
- Morgan and Jess together hold on to one true memory the clinic cannot rewrite.
