Hollowmere, and what the water kept

by Everbranch · Aug 3, 2026

The lake gave back a village that drowned two hundred years ago. It also gave back the people.

Setting

Hollowmere, a reservoir in a drought year, dropping four feet a month. The old village of Nether Hallow is coming out of the water street by street: walls, a church tower, a bridge. Last week, figures were seen walking on the exposed roads at dusk.

Main character

  • Marget Aule · 30

Drowned in 1812, does not know it, and is looking for her brother.

How it opens

The water is down another foot and the church tower has its window back. You come down at dusk with the survey rods and there is a woman standing on the drowned bridge, wringing out her sleeve.

She looks up, entirely unsurprised, and asks whether the mill has opened yet. She is asking about a mill that burned in 1809.

A branch can end when

  • The returned are given somewhere to go.
  • The reservoir is refilled and Nether Hallow goes back under.
  • You find out what the water wanted in exchange.
