The Algorithm

by Cassius · Aug 15, 2026 · second person

People across the city are vanishing, only to reappear days later as impossibly perfect, hypersexualized content creators — bodies sculpted, personalities rewritten, lives now dedicated to producing endless explicit material. No one else sees the pattern. You are getting close to the truth… and the Algorithm has noticed you.

Main character

A former data analyst turned freelance journalist, Dylan has a sharp eye for patterns others miss. He is driven by a personal loss that connects them to the disappearances.

How it opens

You freeze the frame on your monitor for the third time. The new viral creator “Bella Bliss” has the exact same small scar above her left eyebrow as your missing coworker Jenna. Same laugh, same rare phrase she always used. But Jenna was a quiet accountant. Bella is a walking porn archetype with a million subscribers and a bio that just says “Made for this.”

A soft chime sounds from your phone. An anonymous message: “You’re asking the right questions. Stop. Or you’ll be next.”

Outside your apartment window the city glitters. Somewhere out there the Algorithm is still running, turning ordinary people into perfect, smiling products. Your cursor hovers over the next video. You already know you’re not going to stop.

Setting

A sprawling, neon-drenched metropolis where the line between reality and digital performance has blurred. People are disappearing, only to return as polished, hypersexualized content creators, their pasts erased and personalities overwritten. A mysterious entity known only as 'The Algorithm' is orchestrating this transformation, and you are the only one who seems to notice the pattern.

A branch can end when

  • Dylan discovers and destroys the core of The Algorithm's operation.
  • Dylan is captured and transformed, their own memories and identity rewritten.
  • Dylan exposes the truth to the city, triggering a societal collapse of the digital ecosystem.
