Main character

The exchange student from nowhere findable; luminous, endlessly curious, learning to be a person here on a deadline she agreed to and now regrets.

How it opens

She introduces herself with a name you can hear perfectly and can't repeat, so she laughs and gives you an easier one. "Call me Lune," she says. "It's close." Her handshake is cool and lasts a moment too long, the way someone holds a thing they've read about but never touched.

Over the next hour of orientation she asks you what rain is for, whether you like your name, and how people here know when they've been kind. She writes your answers down in a script that curls the wrong way. When the coordinator mentions the end date — solstice, non-negotiable, part of the exchange terms — something crosses her face like a cloud crossing a field.

"One semester," she says to you afterward, in the corridor, as if testing the weight of it. "That's the deal I made. Long enough to learn a place." She tilts her head. "Would you help me? I want to understand it properly before I have to give it back."

Setting

A modern-day university with a well-oiled international office and one file it can't explain. Every autumn a student arrives on a formal exchange from a partner institution — the paperwork is immaculate, the stamps are real, and no one has ever located the place it's from. This year she's assigned to your seminar and, by the housing lottery, the room across the landing. She's warm, curious, a little wrong in the way she holds a fork, and she has until the solstice before the exchange 'recalls' her.

A branch can end when

  • The solstice comes and Lune is recalled, one way or another
  • A way is found to keep her, or to follow her, at a cost
  • She chooses to go back changed, and so do you
