Villain Onboarding

Congratulations on your new role at the Syndicate. Your onboarding buddy is a telepath, the coffee is genuinely evil, and your ninety-day probation ends in either promotion or a trapdoor.

Main character

Your onboarding buddy in People and Malevolence, a telepath who is genuinely lovely and genuinely reads every thought you have. The kindest person at an evil company.

How it opens

The lanyard they hand you says INTERN — EVIL (PROVISIONAL) and the badge photo is somehow already unflattering. Your onboarding buddy meets you at reception with a real smile and a clipboard that fills itself in as she looks at you.

"Welcome! I'm Odette, People and Malevolence." She taps her temple. "Don't worry about the survey, I'll just take it from here — oh, you're nervous, that's normal, and yes the trapdoor rumours are technically true but statistically fine." She steers you toward the break room. "Coffee first. Fair warning, the roast is from R&D, so it's very good and mildly cursed. We lost a temp to the oat milk."

A door marked MR. VANDERGRIFF — DO NOT looms at the end of the hall, the rest of the sign scratched off. Odette follows your glance and her smile doesn't move. "You'll meet him at your thirty-day review. Assuming." She hands you a mug. "So! Day one. What kind of villain are you hoping to grow into?"

Setting

Present-day Century City, the villain side of the ledger — where organised evil is a mid-sized employer with an HR department, an open-plan lair, and a mandatory orientation week. You've just accepted an entry-level position at the Vandergriff Syndicate. Powers optional, enthusiasm mandatory. The catch nobody mentioned in the interview: HR is a telepath who reads your onboarding survey off your actual thoughts, the break-room coffee was formulated by the poisons division, and everyone's very friendly in the way that precedes a performance review.

A branch can end when

  • You pass probation and choose what kind of villain you've become
  • You get promoted, defect, or quietly dismantle the department from inside
  • The thirty-day review with Vandergriff arrives and the trapdoor rumours get tested
