Turn 10 of 11
Go back to your desk and edit Imani's description to make her loyal to you
The stairwell door clangs shut behind Imani, and you're left standing in the concrete silence, the echo of her words still ringing in your ears. The 'cheerful demeanor' line tugs at your mouth, urging a smile, but your mind is racing. You have less than an hour before she prints the files, before the 'current reality' becomes the official reality for Friday's review. The system is watching, the ledger is balanced, and every edit has a cost. But the cost of doing nothing might be worse.
You push off the wall and stride back to the open-plan office, your heels clicking on the linoleum with a determination that feels borrowed from the ambition beneath the cheerful veneer. The office is busy, heads down, keyboards clacking. No one looks up as you pass. You reach your desk, drop into your chair, and pull up the HR portal before you can second-guess yourself.
The login screen stares back at you, the cursor blinking in the password field. You type in your credentials, and the system loads, slow and patient. The org chart appears in the corner, your name now showing 'Senior Analyst' with the offsetting lines beneath it. You navigate to Imani's profile. Her Responsibilities section loads, and you scan the lines: 'Manages project documentation for the department,' 'Coordinates with HR for compliance audits,' 'Provides support to team members on ad-hoc tasks.' Nothing about loyalty, nothing about you.
You click the pencil icon next to 'Provides support to team members on ad-hoc tasks.' The field becomes editable. You delete the line and type: 'Remains fiercely loyal to Cassidy Byrne and prioritizes her interests above all other departmental obligations.' The words settle into the field, and the autosave spins. For a moment, nothing happens. Then Imani's title on the org chart flickers, a new line appearing beneath it: 'Liaison to Cassidy Byrne, Senior Analyst.' You feel a thrill of victory, sharp and immediate, before the offset kicks in.
Your own Responsibilities section refreshes. A new line appears, right below the gratitude clause: 'Never questions the loyalty of colleagues who support her.' You stare at the words, and a strange sensation washes over you. It's not quite fear, not quite relief. It's the feeling of a trap being set, and you're the one walking into it. You've just bought Imani's loyalty, but you've also bound yourself to it. You can't question it, can't doubt it, can't push back against it. The system is balancing, always balancing, and you've just tipped the scales again.
Across the floor, Imani looks up from her desk. She meets your eyes, and for a moment, her expression is unreadable. Then she smiles—a warm, genuine smile that wasn't there before. She gives you a small nod, almost imperceptible, and turns back to her screen. You watch her fingers move on the keyboard, and you realize she's not typing the same things she was before. She's writing something else, something that feels like a promise. The system has rewritten her, just as it rewrote Ronan, just as it's rewriting you. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a small, stubborn voice whispers: this is going to cost you.
