Turn 9 of 11
Convince Imani that the screenshots are doctored and she's seeing things
The concrete of Stairwell B is cool against your back, a stark contrast to the humid, recycled air of the office floor. The acoustics here are unforgiving; every shuffle of your shoe echoes up the shaft. Imani stands six feet away, her back to the metal railing, phone clutched in her hand like a weapon. She hasn't said a word since you walked in, just watched you with an expression that hovers between pity and clinical fascination.
"Imani, look," you start, the words tumbling out with a rehearsed urgency. "I know what you think you saw. I know what the screen looks like. But you need to consider the possibility that the system is glitching. Badly." You step closer, lowering your voice, weaving the lie with the desperate confidence of someone who has no other cards left to play.
"It's a reorg. They're migrating data between servers, patching legacy code. It's not magic. It's IT. And IT is messy."
She doesn't blink. She holds up the phone, displaying the first screenshot. Then the second. Then the third. The timestamps march forward.
"Glitches don't have narrative arcs, Cassidy. Glitches don't rewrite themselves sequentially." She swipes to the last image, the one showing the 'Gratitude Clause' appearing exactly twelve seconds after you deleted the 'Cheerful Demeanor' line.
"I watched your face change when that line appeared. You didn't look confused. You looked... constrained."
You force the smile, the one the system insists on, the one that feels like a rictus.
"I was concentrating! I'm stressed about the review. That's all this is. You're connecting dots that aren't there because you're bored, Imani. You're bored and you want a story." It sounds weak, even to your own ears, but the cheerful line makes it sound sincere. It makes you sound like the harmless, happy junior analyst everyone expects.
Imani sighs, a long, heavy sound that reverberates in the stairwell. She locks her phone and slides it into her pocket.
"I'm going back to my desk," she says, her voice flat. "Ronan wants the files by four. I'm going to print exactly what's in the system right now. The 'current reality.' If you're right, and it's just a glitch, then the printouts will match the server logs. If you're lying..." She trails off, pushing off the railing.
"Well. I guess we'll see what happens on Friday."
She pushes the door open, letting the noise of the office flood in for a moment before letting it slam shut behind her. You're left alone in the quiet hum of the stairwell. You tried to gaslight her, and it failed. Now she's going to print the current versions—your 'Senior Analyst' title, the 'Cheerful Demeanor' line, the 'Gratitude Clause'. She isn't going to HR yet, but she's locking in the evidence. She's making the current, twisted reality official.
