Turn 12 of 13

Follow the crystal path deeper without looking back

You step onto the glowing path and do not look back. The crystals brighten with each footfall, their pulse accelerating to match your stride, and behind you Ordwin's breathing fades into the chamber's organic rhythm. The tunnel walls press closer, worked goblin stone giving way to something older, something that predates the Warren's digging and perhaps predates the goblins themselves. The air thickens with mineral moisture, each breath tasting of copper and intention.

The path descends in gradual spirals, and your status window flickers at the edge of vision, numbers shifting in ways the system was never designed to display. STRENGTH: 2. CHARISMA: 1. LUCK: 0. But SPITE: 99 throbs with something almost like pride, a stat recognizing its native architecture. You pass more crystalline growths containing frozen figures—goblins in warrior's harness, a human man with his jaw locked in absolute refusal, a woman whose tears have formed permanent trails through the crystal's clarity. Each one pulses as you pass, faint harmonic response to your focused intent.

The spiral tightens. The air warms unexpectedly, and the mineral taste shifts toward something organic, almost familial. Rachel's efficiency, you realize. Even her death trap maintains proper climate control. The thought almost makes you laugh, and the Spite stat flares with the emotion, causing the path to branch and reform ahead of you, crystalline decision points responding to your emotional state.

You choose without hesitating, left where intuition suggests right, downward where stability would demand level ground. The path accepts your defiance, brightens, leads you finally into a vaulted cavern where the ceiling disappears in darkness and the floor becomes a single vast crystal, perfectly circular, within which something moves.

The figure is human-shaped, suspended in crystal that has gone cloudy with age or activity, and your Spite stat screams recognition before your mind catches up. The face is yours. Not identical—older, perhaps, or differently angled, the jaw harder, the eyes more practiced in their contempt—but unmistakably yours, and unmistakably awake, watching your arrival with an expression of evaluable disappointment.

"Finally," the figure says, and the crystal carries its voice directly into your sternum, into the space where Spite resides. "I was beginning to think you'd need another seven years to develop sufficient motivation."

Your bent spoon hangs forgotten at your side. The figure shifts within its prison, and the crystal responds, thinning at the surface until the face presses almost against yours, separated by millimeters of translucent mineral.

"Rachel didn't send you here to die," it says, and its smile is your own, perfected through practice you haven't yet lived. "She sent you here to replace me. Spite ninety-nine isn't a weapon, dear. It's a succession plan."
