Turn 13 of 13

Refuse to believe anything it says and attack the crystal

The bent spoon connects with crystal in a sound like a bell struck wrong, and your Spite ninety-nine channels through the impact with a force that shatters your status window into floating red numerals. The figure within flinches—not in pain, but in something like recognition, like a teacher finally seeing a student exceed the lesson plan.

"Good," it says, and the crystal spiderwebs around your spoon's point of contact, fractures racing outward in geometric patterns that spell words in languages you don't know. "That's the response she couldn't predict. The others accepted, you see. Empathy embraced her purpose. Stubbornness outlasted it. Guilt—" A pause, weighted with genuine sorrow. "Guilt believed he deserved to be used."

You strike again, and this time the crystal yields, a shard the size of your fist calving away to reveal the figure's hand, pressed palm-out against the interior surface. It matches yours exactly, down to the scar you earned at eight falling from a jungle gym, down to the particular angle of your knuckles.

"I'm not her puppet," you say, but the words emerge strangled, because your Spite stat is singing harmony with this thing, this older version, this predecessor who wore your face through decades of crystalline stasis.

"No," the figure agrees, and its hand presses harder, meeting yours through the remaining crystal thickness, cold and distant and terribly familiar. "You're her successor. The difference matters more than you know. I was recruited. You—" The crystal thins further, responding to your combined pressure, your merged intent. "You might actually choose."

The cavern shudders. Above, something vast shifts in the darkness, and you understand finally the scale of what Rachel built: not a trap, not a testing ground, but a distributed consciousness requiring specific emotional architectures to function. Empathy for connection. Stubbornness for persistence. Guilt for—

"For conscience," the figure finishes, reading your thought through the crystal's conductivity. "And Spite for will. For the directed force that turns all the others toward purpose. She needed someone who could hate specifically enough to control the system."

Your hand burns with cold. The figure's eyes—your eyes, older, tireder, more practiced in contempt—meet yours with something almost like hope.

"Break it," she whispers. "Not to free me. I don't want freedom anymore. Break it to break the succession. Make her start over. Make her wait another seven years, another forty-seven failures, another—"

"Another you," you finish, understanding the cost of refusal, the weight of the choice she offers. Behind you, distant but approaching, you hear Ordwin's footsteps finally following, too late to advise, too late to witness anything but aftermath.
