Turn 2 of 21
Ask what the punishment actually involves
MC's grip on the bag strap loosens, then tightens again. The question surfaces before she can weigh whether asking is itself a kind of capitulation, a tacit admission that the contract clause has teeth. She asks it anyway.
"What does the punishment actually involve?" Her voice comes out steadier than she expects, which surprises her, because the warmth rolling off Valko's body has nothing to do with steadiness. It sits against her skin like a second layer, thick and distracting.
Valko's expression doesn't change. He stands with his arms at his sides, hands loose, and the casualness of the posture is more unsettling than any clenched fist would be. There's a stillness to him that doesn't match the tension in his frame, as though something inside him is coiled and patient and perfectly happy to wait. He lets the silence stretch for three full seconds before he speaks.
"Burpees."
The word lands so flatly that MC almost laughs. She doesn't, because the gold of his eyes has caught the overhead light in a way that makes the pupils look wrong, too narrow, too vertical, like the eyes of something that hunts at dawn. She blinks, and the effect is gone, or maybe was never there.
"Fifty of them," Valko continues. "Standard form. Chest to the floor, full extension at the top, hands clear of the mat at jump. You short a rep, you start over. You stop before fifty, you start over."
He steps to the side and gestures toward the center mat with one hand, a small, precise motion, the way someone might indicate an open door. The mat is black, shock-absorbent, four meters square, lit by the indirect glow of the wall-mounted panels. It looks innocuous. It looks like every other mat in every other gym MC has ever trained on, and yet standing here, with Valko's heat pressing against her like a wall she can't see, it looks like a stage.
"And if I refuse?" MC hears herself say. It's not genuine defiance this time. It's something else. She wants to hear what he'll say. She wants to know where the edge of this is, where his patience runs out, what lives on the other side of the line she keeps stepping toward.
Valko's mouth curves. Not a smile. Something more private than that, something that touches only one side of his face and stays there.
"Then you don't train tonight," he says. "And you don't book another session. Those are the terms you agreed to."
He pauses. The climate control cycles, pushing a thread of cool air across the room, and it breaks against Valko's warmth like a wave against a rock.
"But you won't refuse. You're not built that way."
MC's pulse kicks against her throat. The bag weighs heavy on her shoulder. The clock on the mirrored wall reads 19:33, and Valko is standing between her and the door, not blocking it, just occupying the space in a way that makes leaving feel like a decision she'd have to explain to herself later. She can feel the mat waiting for her, the fifty burpees waiting, and beneath all of that, something else waiting that neither of them has named yet.
