How it opens
You wake up alone in a bed that isn’t yours, sunlight cutting across unfamiliar sheets. Your body feels wrong in every direction at once: heavier in the chest, narrower in the shoulders, a thick warm weight settled low in your belly. When you throw back the covers you freeze.
Your skin is a rich brown. Your facial features have shifted — fuller lips, a softer nose, distinctly African American. Smooth curves. A rounded, clearly pregnant stomach. No trace of the male body or the race you went to sleep with.
Your phone is on the nightstand. The lock screen shows a photo of you — except the person smiling back is a pretty, heavily pregnant young Black woman with your eyes. Every text thread, every contact, every photo album has been rewritten. Your mother has sent messages asking how “the baby” is treating you. Your boss has emailed about your maternity leave.
A single new message sits at the top from an unknown number:
“You looked so incomplete before. Now you’re perfect. Carry her well.”
Outside, the world has already accepted the new truth. You have always been her. And you are already showing.
Setting
Modern city apartment and daily life. Documents, memories, relationships, and social expectations all treat both the gender transformation, the race change, and the pregnancy as long-established fact.
A branch can end when
- Elliot fully integrates into his new life and identity, finding peace.
