Main character

Recently dumped, secretly floundering, too proud to be seen losing. Improvises the perfect life and gets held to it.

How it opens

"You look... different," Theo says, and you decide, right there, to be different. So you tell him you quit the miserable job, you're modelling now, you've never been happier, you barely think about him at all.

The words leave your mouth and the room changes to match. The takeout containers are gone. There's a rack of clothes you don't remember buying. Your reflection in the dead corner of the screen is a little taller, a little glossier, wearing an expression of serene, expensive calm that is absolutely not how you feel.

He leans in. "Modelling, wow. For who? Say the agency name — I want to look you up." His cursor hovers over a search bar. Your throat is dry. Whatever name you say next, you already know, will be real by the time he finishes typing it — and he's waiting, patient, for you to fill in the blank.

Setting

Present day, a video call that will not end. Theo dumped Priya six weeks ago; tonight she picks up only to win, inventing a dazzling reinvention on the spot. But the phone line is enchanted, or cursed, or simply listening: each detail she claims becomes literally true the instant he believes it. Theo keeps asking follow-ups, innocent and probing, and every answer she improvises rewrites her further to make the story hold.

A branch can end when

  • Priya tells Theo one deliberately true, humiliating thing and the enchantment loses its grip
  • She lets the last lie complete and becomes the woman she invented
  • Sasha physically ends the call before the final question lands
