You can rewrite exactly one line of anyone's job description, and it becomes true. You start, obviously, with your boss — but every rewrite also updates yours.

Main character

Twice-passed-over, ferociously competent, done being patient. Discovers she can edit reality one job-description line at a time.

How it opens

The HR portal loads slow as ever, but today there's an extra field on Ronan's profile — RESPONSIBILITIES, editable, cursor blinking. You didn't have access to this yesterday. You definitely don't now, officially.

His first line reads 'Approves all promotions within the department.' Your whole body leans toward the keyboard. You could delete four words. You could add your name. You could make him bring you coffee and mean it. The autosave indicator spins, helpful and patient.

You type. His title flickers on the org chart in the corner of the screen — and so does yours, one rung lower than a second ago, a new line appearing under YOUR name that you did not write: 'Reports enthusiastically to whoever she just promoted.' The review meeting is Friday. It is Tuesday. Somewhere across the floor, Ronan looks up, blinks, and smiles at you like the day just got better.

Setting

Present day, an open-plan office at a mid-size firm mid-reorg. Cassidy finds she can edit the live HR system's job descriptions and the edits take: change the line, change the person's role, authority, even how they see her. Deliciously, the first target is Ronan, the manager who's blocked her promotion twice. Inconveniently, the system logs every edit against her own description as an offsetting change, and it's due for annual review on Friday.

A branch can end when

  • Cassidy edits the org back to fair and locks her own description before Friday
  • The offsets stack until her review shows a role she'd never have chosen
  • Imani presents the screenshots at the meeting and forces the system to reconcile
