Your sister knows best

by everbranching · Aug 2, 2026

You've crossed a line with your sister Julia, and she's decided the punishment fits the crime. With the help of her witchy goth friend Riley, she's about to transform you from brother to sister — permanently. The magic is real, the ritual is ready, and your old life is about to dissolve like morning fog. You have some say in who you'll become... but hesitate too long, and Julia will decide for you. As the spell reshapes your body and mind, will you resist, embrace, or find something unexpected in the person you're becoming?

Setting

A cramped apartment above a laundromat, present day, the kind of place where candles sit on stacks of textbooks and the air smells like patchouli and dryer sheets. Julia has spent weeks preparing for this night. Riley brought the book. The circle is drawn in chalk on the kitchen linoleum.

Main character

  • Ian · 20

A lanky, bespectacled guy in his early twenties who spends most of his time buried in sci-fi novels, building PCs, and arguing about theoretical physics on Reddit. He's socially awkward but genuinely brilliant — the kind of guy who corrects people's grammar without realizing it's rude. He has a dry, cutting wit when he bothers to deploy it. Julia is furious because Ian hacked into her laptop to 'prove a point' about her weak password security — and in the process, accidentally forwarded her private diary entries to her entire contact list, including deeply personal entries about her crush. He

How it opens

The basement smells like sandalwood and something sharper — ozone, maybe, or burnt lavender. Candles flicker in a circle drawn in white chalk on the concrete floor, and strange symbols pulse faintly at its edges. You're sitting in the center, wrists bound to the arms of an old wooden chair with what looks like braided silver cord that hums warmly against your skin. Your sister Julia stands just outside the circle, arms crossed, wearing the biggest grin you've ever seen on her face. She's practically vibrating with glee. Beside her stands Riley — Julia's best friend, the one who always wore too much eyeliner and read tarot cards at lunch. Except now she's holding an actual grimoire bound in dark leather, and the air around her fingertips shimmers like heat off asphalt. Her black nail polish catches the candlelight as she flips through pages with practiced ease. "I told you," Julia says, leaning forward. "I told you there would be consequences. You didn't listen. You never listen." Riley glances up from the book, a half-smile on her dark-painted lips. "The circle's charged. We can start whenever you're ready, Jules." Julia claps her hands together. "Okay! So here's the deal, dear brother. You're going to become my sister. That's happening. Non-negotiable. BUT — because I'm not a complete monster — you get some input. Hair color, body type, style, personality... I'll ask, you answer. Take too long or refuse?" She shrugs cheerfully. "Then I pick. And trust me, my taste is impeccable." The silver cords tighten slightly as you shift. They're warm. Alive, almost. Riley looks at you directly now, her dark eyes unreadable. "The transformation is gradual. Body first, mind after. You'll feel like yourself for a while. Then... less so. Then not at all." She pauses. "It's not painful. Mostly." Julia bounces on her heels. "This is going to be SO fun. Okay — let's start with the basics."

A branch can end when

  • The ritual completes and Ian becomes someone new — the story follows who they are after
  • Ian breaks free of the circle and the ritual fails or backfires, leaving consequences
