How it opens
You are Riley Hart, twenty-eight, a contract lab technician at Wayne Enterprises, and three days ago you picked up something you should not have. It looked like a silver hairpin in an unlabelled case in Applied Sciences. It was warm. It sank into your palm and was gone, and you told nobody, because who would believe it.
Now you are standing in the ballroom of the Wayne Foundation gala in a dress you do not remember buying, and it fits the way nothing has ever fitted you. Your thoughts keep sliding off anything difficult and landing on how the room is looking at you. Your hair is longer than it was on Monday. Your laugh has gone up half an octave, and you keep hearing it.
Across the room Bruce Wayne turns from a conversation with the mayor, and his eyes find you and stay. A photographer's flash goes off. Somewhere in your head a small, bright, unfamiliar voice says: go to him. The part of you that still remembers your lab badge number says: run.
Setting
Gotham City, present day. Rain on the gargoyles, flashbulbs outside the Wayne Foundation gala, and a prototype in a Wayne Enterprises applied sciences lab that was never meant to leave its case: a neural lattice designed to help a wearer blend into any social role, left unfinished because it worked too well. The lattice latched onto the first person to touch it and began rewriting them toward the role it sensed they were closest to. Gotham's society pages have noticed. So has someone in a cave beneath Wayne Manor.
A branch can end when
- Riley embraces the lattice and becomes Gotham's new jewel on Bruce Wayne's arm, happily and completely.
- Riley finds a way to shut the lattice down and gets her old self back, with Bruce's help or despite him.
- Riley learns to control the lattice and turns it into something Gotham has never seen.
