Main character

The narrator and former flat doormat, now holding a spell she was never meant to hold. Funny, aggrieved, discovering she likes this a bit too much.

How it opens

Right, so, context: they tried to hex me. Actual candles, actual chanting, my actual hairbrush in the middle of the circle — I found the photos on Bex's phone, which, first of all, rude. The spell was supposed to make me 'more of a team player.' Cute. What it actually did, near as I can tell, is make me the one holding the leash, because this morning I said 'God, Toby, do the washing up for once' and Toby stood straight up from his cereal and did it. All of it. Yours included. Whistling.

He doesn't remember why. None of them remember the circle, or the chanting, or my hairbrush, which I would very much like back. They just remember that this is your flat, somehow, and that when you say a thing out loud in these four walls it becomes a very good idea that they thought of themselves. One command at a time. It resets by morning. You've tested it twice and you're pretending you haven't.

Bex just walked in, hungover and horrible, and told you the kitchen's a state and it's 'your week anyway.' The book is under your bed. Your mouth is open.

What do you tell her to do — or do you not use it on her at all?

Setting

A three-storey student houseshare where the other four decided, over cheap wine and a book they definitely should not have bought online, to 'sort out' the flatmate who never does the washing up — that's you. The binding was meant to make you biddable, agreeable, easy. It rebounded. Now every command you say out loud in that flat lands on them instead, one at a time, and they don't quite remember trying it on you. You have receipts, though. You have the book. And you have a very long list of grievances about the washing up.

A branch can end when

  • The flatmates find the counter-hex and the leash changes hands or breaks
  • Nadia goes one command too far and loses someone she meant to keep
  • Nadia chooses to end the spell herself and face them as an equal
