Day by day the stockings tighten their hold, reshaping your body, softening your thoughts, and filling you with an overwhelming need to dress only in sheer, silky hosiery. The more you wear them, the less you remember wanting anything else.

How it opens
You are Claire Whitmore, twenty-nine, and you have not worn a skirt since your sister's wedding. Trouser suits, flat boots, sensible everything: that is how you get taken seriously at the agency, and that is how you like it.
So you do not know why the stockings are in your drawer. They sit folded on top of your socks, black and seamed and so sheer they look like smoke, with a small cream card tucked under them. Two words, in ink: Wear me.
You meant to throw them out. Instead, at some point after midnight, you find yourself sitting on the edge of the bed rolling one slowly up your calf, and the silk is warm, and it feels like being held. The second one goes on before you have decided anything. When you finally reach for the top band to peel them off again, the fabric simply does not move. It is not tight. It is not stuck. It just will not come away from your skin, and your fingers, oddly, do not seem to mind.
Your alarm is set for seven. You have a client pitch at nine.
Setting
A rented one-bedroom flat above a dry cleaner's in a grey, rain-washed city, present day. Nobody else has a key. The stockings are black, seamed, impossibly fine, and warm to the touch, as if someone has only just taken them off. The note is on heavy cream card in handwriting nobody recognises. Across town is Lisette's, a tiny hosiery boutique that should not still be in business, whose owner seems to know exactly who you are.
A branch can end when
- Claire gives herself to the stockings completely and becomes the woman they were made for.
- Claire finds the one who sent them and breaks their hold, keeping only what she chooses.
- Claire strikes a bargain with Lisette and learns to wear the power rather than be worn by it.
