Main character

A poised and determined vampire with a sharp wit and a fierce loyalty to her friends. She carries the weight of past traumas but remains resilient, using her intelligence and compassion as her greatest strengths.

How it opens

The humid air of New Orleans clung to Caroline like a second skin, thick with the scent of jasmine, rain, and something faintly rotten.

Three days.

She’d been in the city for three days, and already she’d learned that New Orleans had a talent for making every bad decision look beautiful.

She stood on the wrought-iron balcony of a centuries-old townhouse, staring out over the French Quarter. Music drifted through the warm night air, the distant sound of a saxophone mingling with laughter, raised voices, and the occasional unmistakable scream that she had learned not to investigate.

Her mission was simple. Find the source of the dark magic that had been draining life from the city’s supernatural inhabitants and stop it. Except nothing in New Orleans was ever simple.

The deeper Caroline dug, the more she realized the magic wasn’t random. Someone wasn’t simply attacking vampires, witches, and werewolves.

They were making a statement. A vendetta.

And whatever—or whoever—was behind it seemed to have their sights set directly on the people who controlled New Orleans.

Which meant, unfortunately, that there was one particular Mikaelson she was going to have to deal with.

As if summoned by the thought alone, a cold draft swept across the balcony.

Caroline turned.

Klaus Mikaelson stood in the open doorway…Of course he did.

He looked exactly as she remembered: impeccably dressed, perfectly composed, and somehow managing to make standing in a doorway look like an act of intimidation.

His blue eyes settled on her.

He didn’t speak.

He simply watched her.

Caroline hated that she noticed the way his gaze lingered. Hated even more that some small, traitorous part of her had always noticed.

“Well,” she said, folding her arms. “If it isn’t New Orleans’ favorite homicidal hybrid.”

One corner of Klaus’s mouth lifted.

“Caroline.”

Just her name. And somehow, after all these years, he could still say it in a way that made her stomach twist.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I could ask you the same question.”

He waited.

She smiled sweetly.

“I’m not going to answer.”

His expression darkened, though there was something almost amused beneath it.

Some things, apparently, never changed.

Then his gaze moved past her toward the dark streets below.

The amusement disappeared.

“You shouldn’t be here alone.”

Caroline raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

“The streets are not safe tonight.”

There was something in his voice that made her smile fade. Concern. And that was far more unsettling than anger ever could have been. Because Klaus Mikaelson didn’t worry about people.

He certainly didn’t worry about her. At least, he wasn’t supposed to.

Setting

New Orleans, present day. The city is a simmering cauldron of supernatural politics, ancient magic, and hidden dangers. Caroline Forbes, a vampire, has returned to the French Quarter to aid in stopping a new, malevolent force that threatens to unravel the delicate balance of power. Klaus is a morally grey character and there’s a “he hates everyone except her” dynamic.

A branch can end when

  • The supernatural threat is neutralized, and the city's balance is restored.
  • Their restraint finally breaks, forcing Caroline and Klaus to confront the undeniable desire between them.
  • They confront the pain and mistakes of their past, finally acknowledging the feelings they’ve spent years denying.
