A chill and easygoing young woman downloads the Nextdoor app just to keep up with local happenings. The more time she spends scrolling posts, leaving comments, and getting into petty neighborhood disputes, the more the app begins changing her. Slowly her appearance ages and hardens into the classic entitled suburban look, while her personality shifts into that of a classic Karen. Constantly offended, demanding to speak to managers, and obsessed with rules, property values, and other people’s business.

How it opens
The posting screen glows in your palm as you type your first comment — 'hmm, probably just raccoons, maybe ask a neighbor?' — under a thread titled UNKNOWN VEHICLE ON MAPLE, 3RD DAY. You hit submit. That's all this was supposed to be: trash schedules, lost cats, maybe a block party. Chill. Easy.
But you keep scrolling. The thread about the leaf blower guy has 214 replies and you've read every one. Your thumbs have opinions now. You catch yourself drafting a comment about 'property values' and delete it, laughing a little. Weird. Not really your phrase.
In the dark window behind your phone, your reflection is harder to see than usual. The lighting's bad, you tell yourself. The bob of hair in the glass looks shorter, blonder, set in stiff waves — but the lighting's bad. The app pings. Three new posts: a dispute over a fence line, a complaint about someone's 'aggressive' wreath, and a poll. Your thumb is already moving.
Setting
Present-day suburban America. Mara Ellery, 26, downloads Nextdoor to find out about trash pickup schedules and ends up sucked into a spiral of petty disputes, hoa warnings, and comment-section warfare. As her engagement deepens, her reflection begins to change — the app is remaking her into someone else, one post at a time.
A branch can end when
- Mara fully becomes the person the app is building and forgets she was ever anyone else
- Dana or someone else intervenes in time to pull her back before the change completes
- Mara discovers what the app actually is and finds a way to delete it — or herself from it
