by Cassius · Sep 9, 2026 · second person

Main character

Quiet and resentful second-year student who has spent years in the shadow of a more successful older sibling. Bitter, observant, and suddenly holding reality-altering power.

How it opens

You’re sitting on your bed scrolling through your phone when the screen glitches and a translucent blue interface blooms across your vision. Every person within a hundred metres is now listed with editable sliders: height, curves, intelligence, personality, clothing, even social reputation.

Your older sibling’s name sits at the top, followed by their partner’s. You drag a few sliders as a test — watching through the window as their bodies and postures shift in real time. Then a new window pops up with your own name highlighted in red. A calm system message reads:

“User optimisation recommended. Apply selected changes?” Your hands are already trembling and the first uninvited adjustment is beginning to crawl across your own skin.

Setting

Modern university campus, dorms, and nearby student apartments.

A branch can end when

  • Alex fully integrates with the interface, losing their original sense of self in a stream of perpetual 'optimization'.
  • Alex finds a way to destroy or disable the interface, but must live with the consequences of the changes already made to reality.
  • The interface's instability causes a catastrophic breakdown in the fabric of local reality, trapping Alex in a collapsing loop.
