Salt air and neon
Vanessa, aged 20, ran away from home after a row with her parents. She ended up in Pattaya. She’d heard about the nightlife from a friend and wanted to experience it for herself. She’s rented a flat for a year; it’s near the red-light district because the rent is cheap there.
Play as
Sharp-tongued and stubborn, freshly arrived from England with a suitcase, a year-long lease, and no plan past the first week. She tells everyone she's on holiday.
How it opens
The ceiling fan turns with a lazy, grinding patience, pushing hot air around without ever cooling it. You lie on a mattress that is still wrapped in plastic, staring at a water stain shaped like a running dog, and listen to the soi below: bass thumping from three bars, a scooter horn, a vendor's bell, laughter in three languages you don't fully speak. Your flat costs almost nothing because of what it sits beside, and by nine at night the whole street has made that fact unmistakable.
Your phone says four missed calls from Mum, one from Dad, thirty-one unread messages. The last message from your best friend, sent before the flight, still glows in the thread: *you'll love it, trust me*. You have nine thousand baht left, a year on this lease, and a CV that nobody in Pattaya has asked to see.
Downstairs, a smell of lemongrass and charcoal drifts up the stairwell — the noodle cart you can see from your window is lit up, and the woman running it glanced up at you this morning like she was taking inventory. Somewhere out there, a city that never sleeps is deciding what to make of you. You could decide first.
Setting
Pattaya, Thailand, present day. Vanessa, twenty, fled a blazing row at home in London and blew her savings on a one-way ticket and a cheap one-year flat at the edge of the bars and go-go clubs. Now the money is thinning, the monsoon season is coming, and the city offers her a hundred ways to stay — most of them with fine print. She has to decide what she's actually running from, and what she's willing to become to avoid going back.
A branch can end when
- Vanessa's one-year lease runs out, forcing a decision to stay, move on, or go home
- Vanessa reconciles with her family or cuts them off for good
- Vanessa builds a stable life in Pattaya — or loses everything and has to leave
