Say it and it's so

Evie kneels on the attic floor of a house she has owned for exactly four days, armed with a shop vac and a mask, when her broom strikes something solid under a rotted trunk. The amulet comes up black with grime, heavy in her palm, a disc of dull silver on a leather cord. She wipes it clean, says to the empty room, "Well. Now I have something interesting," and slips it on because it feels rude not to.

She doesn't notice anything until Nadia arrives that evening with pad thai and a running commentary on the neighborhood. Evie, gesturing at the rain hammering the windows, says, "It'll clear up by eight, watch." At 7:58 the clouds part like a curtain and the street goes gold. Nadia laughs at the coincidence. Evie does not. Her mind is back in the attic, replaying every idle thing she's muttered since she put the thing on — including the thing she said about the neighbor, who has not been seen since.

The house creaks. The amulet sits warm at her throat, patient as a held breath. Evie thinks about what her mouth does when she's tired, or lonely, or honest — and about how much of her life she has spent saying things she didn't mean, and a few things she very much did.
